The knee injury Dustin Garrison suffered at West Virginia's Orange Bowl practice means he will be one of at least three Mountaineer starters who will miss spring practice because of surgeries.
Safety Terence Garvin and linebacker Jewone Snow will also have to sit out, but a handful of others who missed all or part of last season should be ready to return.
WVU football trainer Dave Kerns provided updates Wednesday on all the injured players.
Garrison underwent reconstructive ACL surgery on his left knee on Jan. 13 and has begun the initial stages of rehab. He suffered the non-contact injury during West Virginia's Orange Bowl preparations in Miami on Dec. 30.
Garvin did not play in WVU's 70-33 win over Clemson after he underwent surgery to repair a cartilage tear on Dec. 11. Kerns said Garvin is scheduled to come out of a brace and off crutches Friday and should be cleared to play by June.
Snow, an on-and-off starter at middle linebacker, had the first of two shoulder surgeries on Jan. 6, two days after the bowl game. He will have surgery on the other shoulder at the end of February. Kerns said his return is too early to predict.
While those three are just beginning the healing process, former starting guard Josh Jenkins (knee) has been cleared and is participating in off-season strength work. Starting linebacker Doug Riff (wrist) is still progressing, although he played even with a cast on his arm during the second half of the season. And linebacker Donovan Miles is recovering from surgery to a broken bone in his hand and should return by spring drills.
Freshman defensive back Terrell Chestnut had shoulder surgery on Aug. 31 and should also be cleared for the spring.
Meanwhile, walk-on Connor Arlia, who suffered a broken leg (among other injuries) in a jet ski accident at the Orange Bowl, will be evaluated throughout the coming months.
The hire is expected to be former New York Jets assistant Mike Smith, who played at Texas Tech in the 1990s when Dana Holgorsen was on the staff there. Smith worked last season as an intern with the Jets and had been rewarded with a full-time position coaching outside linebackers.
