CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia University's move to the Big 12 Conference will spark a "modest increase" in football season ticket prices and per-seat donations to the Mountaineer Athletic Club, WVU Athletic Director Oliver Luck announced in an email to season ticket holders Tuesday.
The Mountaineer Athletic Club is a fundraising organization that supports athletics at WVU.
"We will be making a modest increase in the [Mountaineer Athletic Club] per seat gift requirements and season ticket prices to remain competitive among the nation's elite athletic programs," Luck wrote in the email. "Based upon ticket market data, the Mountaineer season ticket remains one of the best values in college football."
Luck does not detail the amount of the increase, but wrote that season ticket holders will soon receive information regarding a new "Priority Points Program."
"Our staff has conducted extensive research to develop a plan that rewards longtime season ticket holders and contributors for their support of the athletic program and the University," Luck wrote. "I think you will find it to be a fair and equitable program to assist in the allocation of tickets and benefits to bowl games, basketball tournaments, away games and seating locations."
Over the next few years, Luck wrote that WVU would address several areas that would help the university compete in the Big 12. Those include upgrades to Milan Puskar Stadium and the WVU Coliseum, meeting the rising costs of tuition and housing for student-athletes on scholarship, and adapting to the increased travel commitment that many of WVU's teams will face.
"Football is critical to the financial support of our entire athletic program and football ticket sales are our most important revenue stream," Luck wrote. "West Virginia ranks seventh of 10 Big 12 schools in football revenue. This, coupled with one of the smallest football stadiums in the conference, spells the realistic challenges facing the University."Last month, Luck would not comment to the Gazette about increased ticket prices.
