WVU's Smith named Maxwell semifinalist

West Virginia University senior quarterback Geno Smith was named one of 16 semifinalists Monday for the 76th Maxwell Award for college football player of the year.

Smith has passed for 2,417 yards with 26 touchdowns and two interceptions for the Mountaineers (5-2), completing 74.3 percent of his pass attempts.

Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, Southern California wide receiver Marqise Lee and quarterback Matt Barkley and Oregon running back Kenjon Barner also headline the field. The winner of the Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the College Football Awards Show on Dec. 6 on ESPN. Three finalists will be announced Nov. 19 and a second round of voting will take place.
