The NCAA has suspended Gerun for the first six games of the season because prior to his enrollment he played three games for a professional team in the Ukraine during the 2011 season.
The school knew about his participation on the professional team, which is not at all unusual for European players. But since the NCAA seems to have little uniformity in its penalties for such participation, the school wasn't sure when Gerun would be available, if at all.
Mountaineer senior Deniz Kilicli was suspended 20 games at the start of his freshman season for participating as an unpaid professional in Turkey.
A 6-foot-10 forward, Gerun led the Ukraine in scoring (18.2), rebounding (11.1) and blocked shots (2.1) at the 2011 under-18 European Championships. He will be eligible for WVU's Dec. 8 home game against Virginia Tech, missing the opener at Gonzaga, three games at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., a home game with VMI and the Dec. 5 game with Marshall in Charleston.
