Gundy pointed out that WVU hit some deep throws.

"They had a chance to hit a few more and they overthrew them," said the coach. "We have to continue to work to get better at that. But we were good in all three phases. That's a good win for us. I'm very proud of our team."

  • Holgorsen sidestepped the issue of returning to Oklahoma State, where he served as offensive coordinator for a year before coming to WVU.

"OSU is a team that gives a lot of effort," he said when asked. "They go out there each game and play for each other. They play for their school and play to win. They didn't make as many mistakes as we did and they gave a lot of effort. OSU has some great things going on and they're a good team."

OSU's Sharp, however, did address the angle of Holgorsen - and defensive coordinator Joe DeForest, quarterback coach Jake Spavital and running backs coach Robert Gillespie - returning to Stillwater.

"It was a big win for us," said the kicker. "Going against West Virginia and those coaches ... they knew a lot about us just from the coaches that were here and left. To get that sixth win was big for us. It's good to get over that hump."

    Briefly

  • Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young said he was happy to see Holgorsen's offense visit. "Even though it doesn't look like it by the score, it helped us a little bit playing against our offense every day," Young said. "It's almost a mirror image of it. That was a big, big thing for us."
  • Geno Smith grabbed one of the few school records he didn't already hold in Saturday's game, and it was a big one. With 363 yards of total offense, he moved past Pat White for the career record with 10,772. White had 10,529 yards from 2005 through 2008. There's still at least one other mark Smith has a chance to get. He's now responsible for 91 touchdowns in his career (87 passing, four rushing) and is 12 away from White's record of 103.
  • Stedman Bailey also tied the school record for catches in a game with 14 (for 225 yards). Tavon Austin shares the mark from the Baylor game this season.
  • Pat Eger, once the team's starting right tackle, has been moved to guard and replaced Josh Jenkins for much of the second half at left guard. Curtis Feigt started his second game in a row at right tackle, but Nick Kindler also played there.
  • Darwin Cook, who didn't play at all last week against TCU after starting 20 straight games, got in a few times Saturday, mostly at free safety in place of freshman Karl Joseph. Cecil Level started at Cook's old strong safety spot and was also a team captain.
