Baker Dave Cole of The Bakery in Lewisburg prepares bagels during The Greenbrier Classic PGA tournament week. He says the golf event is a boon to local businesses.
LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- Every day, employees at The Bakery in Lewisburg roll out about 100 bagels by hand and bake them in a traditional gas-fired hearth oven at 650 degrees.
Baker Dave Cole said that after the first Greenbrier Classic, last year, The Bakery knows the extra work it has in store when the tournament rolls around.
"We make about 350 bagels a day during the week of the Classic," said Cole, of Saint Albans. "We've made over 1,000 bagels in the past three days."
The PGA golf tournament brings in thousands of tourists to the quaint town just outside White Sulphur Springs.
Cole said the best part isn't the booming business, though. It's watching newcomers from across the country get excited about the taste of unique, down-home cooking.
Reporters with CBS News were so satisfied with the bakery that they now have bagels delivered to their office in New York.
"Now we overnight-deliver about three to nine dozen bagels to them a day," Cole said. "They said they've traveled all over the country and ours are the best bagels they've ever tasted. It's very flattering to hear."
Cole said the golf event is something business owners in Lewisburg appreciate.
"I think The Greenbrier Classic is a great thing. It makes for a rough week, but it's very much worth it," he said. "Some of these shops are pretty dead most of the time, but this week, people from all over really get to discover the little town of Lewisburg."
Laura Stanley of St. Albans said The Bakery is a must see every time she visits the area. She stopped in Saturday morning for some fresh baked wheat bread and biscotti.
"Every time we're near the Lewisburg area, my family has to stop here. It's wonderful," Stanley said. "Everyone should stop and experience what the town has to offer."
The Bakery makes breads, pizzas and desserts every day. Cole said its secret to success is pretty simple.
"We're very down home and simple. We don't put on any airs," he said. "Our focus is just good food."
The Bakery is located at 102 N. Court St. and is open Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
