W.Va. public employees rally at Capitol
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Presidents Day allowed some West Virginia state employees to rally at the Capitol on their day off for better working conditions.
Members of the Public Workers Union are pressing lawmakers and Gov. Joe Manchin to recognize seniority rights, provide a cost-of-living increase and halt involuntary transfers.
The group also opposes looming premium hikes to their health coverage. The finance board of the Public Employees Insurance Agency approved those cost increases following a series of hearings around the state. The workers union wants to require that a minimum number of board members attend future public hearings.
A dozen or so group members attended Monday's rally. They also presented a petition to Manchin signed by nearly 2,000 supporters.
