Comment period ending on W.Va. mountaintop mine
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - More than 1,200 people have commented on the Environmental Protection Agency's plan to revoke a crucial permit for West Virginia's largest mountaintop removal mine.
Some submissions contain multiple comments, so the number could be far higher.
The deadline to weigh in on Arch Coal's Spruce No. 1 mine in Logan County is midnight Friday. Letters must be postmarked by 4:30 p.m.
The EPA has said it plans to veto a previously granted permit for the mine because valley fills would bury 7 miles of streams, hurt water quality and affect nearly 2,300 acres of forest.
The project was permitted in 2007, but has been delayed by lawsuits.
EPA spokeswoman Donna Heron say it may take a week or more to review the comments, so it's unclear how they break down.
