W.Va. board OKs 40 counties' preschool plans
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The West Virginia Board of Education has approved 40 counties' plans for implementing universal prekindergarten programs.
Board members also voted Wednesday to update the state preschool policy's content standards, objectives and learning criteria. Public comment on the proposed changes will be taken for 30 days.
Education officials told the board that 15 counties have implemented universal preschool programs this year.
State law requires preschool programs to be available to all 4-year-olds by the 2012-2013 school year.
The West Virginia Department of Education says nearly 14,000 children were enrolled in preschool programs in 2009.
