PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Tea party members have launched a petition drive seeking to recall Parkersburg's mayor and five City Council members who supported the city's new user fee.
Local tea party President Sandy Staats told The Parkersburg News that her group has distributed hundreds of petitions seeking to force a recall vote.
Staats says the group also plans to put up a billboard this week and launch a traveling "recall mobile" to collect signatures.
City Clerk Connie Shaffer says a recall would require the signatures of 20 percent of the city's almost 19,000 registered voters, about 3,790.
City Council voted 5-4 in January to approve the $2.50-a-week fee after months of debate. Everyone who works in Parkersburg must pay the fee.
