Elton John to play Charleston Civic Center in June

By Bill Lynch, Staff writer and Mackenzie Mays

Music fans in Southern West Virginia got big news on a couple of fronts Tuesday.

Superstar Elton John will play the Charleston Civic Center on June 11. A few weeks later, rockers Maroon 5 and summer music legend Jimmy Buffett will headline the entertainment at the Greenbrier Classic golf tournament in Greenbrier County.

Charleston is one of 13 stops John is making on his latest tour to promote his new album, “The Diving Board.”

John, who holds the record for the best-selling single of all time for his 1997 hit, “Candle in the Wind,” last performed in Charleston in 2007 — a performance that has not been forgotten, Charleston Civic Center general manager John Robertson said Tuesday.

“We are ecstatic to have entertainment icon Elton John coming to Charleston. When he was last here, about seven years ago, it was one of the best concerts we have ever experienced, and I am confident that our community will experience a memory for a lifetime if they are fortunate enough to attend this concert,” Robertson said.

John has sold more than 250 million records worldwide and has dozens of gold and platinum singles and albums. His hits spanning a five-decade-long career include “Tiny Dancer,” “Circle of Life,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Rocket Man,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and more.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on April 11. Tickets will be available at livenation.com, at the Charleston Civic Center box office, and by phone at 800-745-3000. Customers are limited to eight tickets per purchase. For more information, contact the Charleston Civic Center at 304-357-7420.

As for the Greenbrier Classic Concert Series, Maroon 5 will start the series on July 4 at the State Fair of West Virginia Amphitheater in Fairlea.

The Grammy Award-winning band, fronted by Adam Levine (also a coach on NBC’s “The Voice”), has been wildly successful on the pop music charts with songs like “One More Night,” “Moves Like Jagger” and “She Will Be Loved.”

The following night, July 5, will feature Buffett, an iconic performer and singer-songwriter whose career spans five decades. A summer concert tour fixture, he’s best known for hit songs “Margaritaville,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Fruitcakes.” While Buffett’s songs have seldom been huge hits on the country or pop music charts, he has a massive and devoted following of fans called “parrotheads.”

Both shows begin at 9:30 p.m.

The Concert Series coincides with the resort’s fifth annual PGA Tour event. The concert has been a popular feature of the golf tournament. Performers in previous years have included Aerosmith, the Black Eyed Peas and Toby Keith.

Admission to the Greenbrier Classic Concert Series is included in the price of weekly Greenbrier Classic tournament badges. Badges cost $179 per person. In addition to the tournament badge that includes both shows, this year The Greenbrier is offering $60 badges, which include admission to the tournament grounds for the week and either the Maroon 5 show or the Jimmy Buffett concert.
