Tasty treats to make with Girl Scout cookies
Spring is the time of year when people get to start enjoying their Girl Scout cookies — from the lemony Savannah Smiles, shortbread Trefoils, peanut butter Do-si-dos and caramel Dulce de Leche to the chocolate caramel coconut Samoas, cranberry white chocolate chip Thank U Berry Munch, chocolate peanut butter Tagalongs and chocolate mint Thin Mints.
The Girl Scouts of the United States of America, which celebrated its centennial in 2012, has been selling cookies as a fundraisers since 1917. One little known fact is that Girl Scout cookies began in a bake sale style, in which Girl Scouts made homemade cookies and sold them door to door.
As many people know, Girl Scout cookies are great right out of the box, sometimes in one sitting. However, these diverse and delicious cookies can be used in a variety of delectable recipes, many of which can be found at www.littlebrowniebakers.com.
Many of these delicious recipes are extremely simple to make. For instance, with just a blender and a few ingredients, you’ve got the Tagalongs Shake.
To make a Tagalong Shake for one person, combine about four Tagalongs cookies, three cups of vanilla ice cream and a 1/2 cup of milk in a blender and blend until it reaches a milkshake consistency. This can be topped with whipped cream and cookie crumbles.
Thin Mint Brownies can also be made with just a few ingredients. Begin by breaking up about 14 Thin Mints into chunks. Combine the cookie chunks, one box of brownie mix, two eggs (three for a more cake-like consistency), 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup vegetable oil in a bowl and mix with a wooden spoon. Pour the mixture into a greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan and bake in the center of a 350-degree oven for 30-35 minutes. Let them cool, and you’re ready to share with friends.
Samoas Trail Mix is perfect for a snack anytime. To make this, chop up one box of Samoas cookies. Mix with eight ounces raisins, eight ounces dried apples, eight ounces roasted peanuts and eight ounces dried pineapple.
To switch things up, substitute dried mangoes, sunflower seeds or cashews. Put the trail mix into sandwich bags for convenience.
Fruit-lovers will rejoice in the Trefoils Cheesecake Cup. To make eight servings, start by finely crushing about 18 cookies. Prepare one box instant cheesecake pudding mix. Mix the cookie crumbs into the cheesecake pudding and 12 ounces softened cream cheese. Top with strawberries or another berry, two whole Trefoils cookies and chocolate syrup.
Here in the Black Diamond Council, cookies are sold for $4 a box. If you missed the boat and did not buy any cookies yet, do not despair. Many Girl Scouts you know may still have extra boxes to sell. You can also check cookielocator.littlebrownie.com to locate sales near you.
