Vote for Charleston’s Best of the Best

By By Maria Young
Assistant city editor/features

Whether you’re a visitor or a resident, the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) wants your vote.

The CVB is holding its second annual Tourism People’s Choice Awards, which means they’re looking for the best of the best tourism attractions in the Charleston city limits.

The public is invited to vote on everything from their favorite restaurant, attraction, lodging, retail shop or boutique and event.

Nominations are also being accepted for favorite specialty drink, food dish, dessert shop/bakery, nightlife spot and family activity.

“This is our opportunity to highlight what’s fun, the best places to eat, best places to stay, all of those things that give people a great experience while they’re here,” said CVB President and CEO Alisa Bailey.

It’s particularly important to identify and recognize tourism successes here, she added, because Kanawha County has a much higher than average number of people who come to visit family and friends — 52 percent, compared to 49 percent of visitors statewide and 45 percent nationally, according to a study compiled by the West Virginia Department of Tourism in 2010.

“We can do a great job of getting people here but once they get here if they don’t like the food, if they don’t like the accommodations, they’re not going to want to come back,” Bailey said.

Those who submit nominations will be entered to win a $50 Visa gift card.

Nominations will be accepted online at www.charlestonwv.com through April 13.

Nominations will be narrowed to the top four from each category and will be revealed for another round of voting. The final vote will begin April 14 and winners will be presented during National Tourism Week, May 3-11.
