Charleston Daily Mail: Hats off, April 19, 2014

Perhaps no state agency is as maligned as the Division of Motor Vehicles, and falsely so. Far from being clones of Patty and Selma Bouvier from “The Simpsons,” DMV workers are as polite and responsive to the public as anyone in retail.

Indeed, the 24 regional offices long ago replaced long lines with a system of take-a-number-and-sit for the annual vehicle registration and other services.

But in 43 counties, people can now stay at home and sit. The DMV went online for vehicle registration in Kanawha, Putnam and 41 other counties that have online property tax verification. As counties went online for taxes, the DMV saw an opportunity to register cars and trucks online.

The web site — dmv.wv.gov — is open 24/7 and the DMV charges a $1 fee for handling each transaction.

Hats off top DMV officials who once again put their customers first.
