Wine classes to benefit needy hospital patients

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Maybe you’ve secretly thought people who sniff their glass of wine are being rude.

Perhaps you’re not sure whether to cook with wine that cost $8 a bottle or $80.

Or it could be that you just don’t understand how something made with fresh fruit and stomped on with bare feet can improve with age.

Wherever your knowledge of wine is lacking, you can find all the answers you need in one place.

Chics for Charity, under The Foundation for the Thomas Memorial and Saint Francis Hospitals, is hosting “Wine With Us” at 6 p.m. May 14 at Berry Hills Country Club. For the first time in this annual event, men are also invited to attend.

Sunday Gazette-Mail “Vines & Vittles” columnist John Brown; Ted Armbrecht, with The Wine & Cheese Shop; Mike Bee, with Falcor Winery; and Berry Hills chef Paco Aceves will be educating guests on the history of wine, varieties of grapes, the Five S’s of wines (sight, smell, swirl, sip and swallow), selecting wines, cooking with wine, and more.

Tickets for the event are $50 for Chic members and $75 for new members, which includes a lifetime membership fee of $25. Tickets for male guests are $50 each.

Funds raised will be used to assist patients who are discharged from Saint Francis Hospital and cannot afford medications and other medical needs to continue their recovery at home.
