Winfield knocks off No. 1 Nitro

Derek Whiteside went 1 for 3 with two runs batted in and Brandon Wright scored twice as Winfield knocked off Class AAA No. 1 Nitro Wednesday evening at Winfield High School.

Brett Adkins allowed seven hits in a complete-game effort, Jordan Clark went 3 for 3 and Bryan Bosley doubled for the Generals (6-10). Edward Flores went 2 for 2 with a double and a triple and Andrew Stone added two hits for the Wildcats.

South Charleston 10, Oak Hill 7: South Charleston capitalized on six Oak Hill errors to earn a home win. Trevor Sampson recorded a three-run double and Isaiah Moss drove in two runs to lead the Black Eagles. Chris Hysill went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Richard Epperly drove in a run for the Red Devils.

Woodrow 12, GW 10: Jacoby Webb went 2 for 3 with three RBIs as host Woodrow Wilson slugged its way to a win. Chris Metrick went 3 for 4 for the Flying Eagles. Clayton Anderson went 4 for 5 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs for the Patriots (10-7).

Ripley 5, Herbert Hoover 4: Ripley plated a run in the bottom of the eighth to take down visiting Herbert Hoover. Trevor Tucker had a triple and an RBI and Isaac Koontz went 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Vikings (12-10). Scooter Farmer had two hits for the Huskies (15-3).

Buffalo 12, Wirt County 1: Buffalo scored five runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to win at home. Beau Whittington allowed three hits in five innings of work, Nick Gunter had a triple and two RBIs and Laythen Good added a two-run triple to lead the Bison (8-8).

Cabell Midland 6, Logan 2: Cabell Midland scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put away visiting Logan. Brady Elkins and Cody Ballengee each went 2 for 3 and Derek Adkins doubled to lead the Knights (11-8). Chase Preston and Josh Rein each recorded a double to lead the Wildcats (10-6).

Prep softball

Wayne 3, Sissonville 2: Sissonville rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but fell short of host Wayne. Jessie Rowe allowed three hits in seven innings and Kasey Enidcott went 2 for 2 with two RBIs to lead the Pioneers (16-5). Taylor Legg drove in a run and Brooke Young doubled for the Indians.

Ravenswood 7, Roane County 3: Savana Casto struck out 15 and allowed five hits in seven innings as Ravenswood won at home. Casto recorded a two-run double and Ariana Kennedy went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Red Devils. Shyanne Starcher drove in two runs for the Raiders.

Point sweeps East: Karson Bonecutter went 2 for 2 with a double, grand slam and four RBIs to set the tone in leading visiting Point Pleasant past Greenbrier East 11-1 in three innings in the opener of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, Madison Barker rapped out two hits and two RBIs as the Big Blacks held off the Spartans 7-6.

Barker doubled in a run for Point (14-6) in the first game and Rebecca Darst had three hits and an RBI in the second. Jamie Vallandingham singled in two runs for East (12-3) in the nightcap.

Hurricane 12, Winfield 2: Courtney Rogers went 4 for 5 with a grand slam and six RBIs to lead Hurricane over host Winfield. Maddie Hebb went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Emily Davis added two RBIs on two hits for the Redskins (21-1). Kenna Markham went 2 for 3 with a home run for the Generals.

Riverside sweeps: Catie McCormick went 3 for 3 with a double, homer and three RBIs as Riverside downed George Washington 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep. Kendall Marshall rapped out four hits, including a pair of triples, and knocked in three runs as the Warriors beat the Patriots 15-4 in six innings in the opener.

Cassady Schmidt went 4 for 5 and scored three runs in the first game and had two hits and plated three runs in the second for Riverside (10-9). Billie Murray and Madelyn Gerwig had two hits apiece for GW in the opener and Cailin McClure went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.
