Area roundup: MSAC softball tournament semifinals set today

The Mountain State Athletic Conference softball tournament begins today with semifinals taking place at No. 1 Hurricane.

The Redskins (23-1), the defending Class AAA state champions and No. 1 team in the state poll, will take on No. 4 Cabell Midland (18-6) at 7 p.m. with No. 2 Spring Valley (15-4) playing No. 3 Ripley (13-5) at 5. A consolation game will be played at 5 p.m. Wednesday with the championship at 7.

Place-winner games will be held at host sites today, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Hurricane has beaten Midland this season by scores of 9-8, 4-2 and 13-1 in four innings.

MEC AWARDS: Shepherd ace Paul Hvozdovic has been named the Mountain East Conference baseball pitcher of the week, while Concord’s Bret Blevins earned the league’s player of the week.

Hvozdovic tossed a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win over Urbana on Saturday, striking out 12 and walking just one for the complete-game victory. Blevins stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with a hit in each of Concord’s four games last week. For the week, he hit .600 and drove in five runs.

WVU SPORTS: Sophomore left-hander pitcher Ross Vance has been named the Big 12 baseball newcomer of the week for his performance last week in wins against Maryland and Kansas State. Vance went 2-0 in two starts, allowing two runs on eight hits in 13 innings. He struck out 13 and walked one, finishing the week with a 1.38 ERA.

AREA BOWLING: Galaxy Lanes in Charleston will host a Senior No-Tap tournament today at noon. The cost is $10 per bowler. And, a senior summer bowling league begins May 6 at noon. The cost is $10 each week. For more information, call 304-925-1156.

Sissonville 11, Roane County 1: Josh Landis went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI as Sissonville won at home. Chris Linville added two hits and drove home two runs for the Indians (14-9). John Riley went 3 for 3 for Roane County (11-11).
