2014 Knights of the Golden Horseshoe recognized

KENNY KEMP | Gazette The 2014 Knights of the Golden Horseshoe pose with state officials on the steps of the Capitol on Thursday morning.

More than 200 West Virginia eighth-graders were inducted as Knights of the Golden Horseshoe on Thursday, in recognition of their knowledge of the state’s history and culture. The Golden Horseshoe test has been administered in West Virginia each year since 1931 and is the longest-running program of its kind in the United States, according to the West Virginia Department of Education. The top-scoring students in each county receive the award. Each county has at least two winners.

The Golden Horseshoe name derives from an early exploration of western Virginia in the 18th century. Alexander Spotswood, then governor of Virginia, gave a golden horseshoe to about 50 men who were part of the exploration party.

The exam tests student knowledge on West Virginia citizenship, civics and government, economics, geography, history and current events. A full list of this year’s winners is below.
