Open stage/coffee house

Unity of Kanawha Valley will be home to the monthly Open Stage and Coffee House with host Ron Sowell at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9. Local musicians are welcome to come and share their talents in a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere. Performers sign up at 7 p.m. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $5. Admission for performers, seniors and children is $2. Various coffees, teas, soft drinks and homemade treats are available at a small cost. Unity of Kanawha Valley is located at 804 Myrtle Road, corner of Bridge and Myrtle roads.

Bridge dedication

There will be a dedication in honor of William T. “Big Bill” Elswick at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, on the Hansford Ball Fields. Signs have been placed at the bridge, which is located between Pratt and Hansford to honor Elswick, who served in the U.S. Army as master sergeant and performed many services for the community. His love and dedication was especially for the children of Little League baseball. Friends and family are invited to attend.

Kanawha Valley DAR

The Kanawha Valley Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at noon on Saturday, May 10, for their Mother’s Day Luncheon at the Lion Heart Chateau in Hurricane. The luncheon will be catered by the Greenhouse of Hurricane. Hostesses are Shirley Gilkeson and Sally Holiday. Women’s Issues Chairman Janet Leslie will give a tribute to Anna R. Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day. A Service of Remembrance for Deceased Members will be conducted by Chaplain Lois Taylor. Members will be given a private tour of the Lion Heart Chateau by Ruth Ann Crist. Potting workshop

Valley Gardens will host a Potting Workshop in honor of Mother’s Day, from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 10, at its location at 1109 Piedmont Road. Individuals can create a customized flower planter. There will be a wide variety of planters and flowers at all different prices to choose from and a master gardener will be there to provide expertise. Dog Jog and 5K Run

Putnam Animal Shelter will sponsor a Dog Jog and 5K Run event beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, at Valley Park in Hurricane. Runners are encouraged to bring their dogs to run along with them at no additional charge. Dogs from the shelter available for adoption. Display tables and booths will be featured with giveaways. Trophies will be awarded in each age group as well as a special trophy given for the best dog/owner combination. Registration for the run is $25 and can be done online at http://www.tristateracer.com/, or at the shelter. Registration can also be made beginning at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday at Valley Park. All money raised from the event minus expenses will go toward establishing the Putnam County Spay/Neuter fund which will assist low income pet owners with the cost of having their animals sterilized reducing the dog and cat overpopulation in Putnam County.
