More information sought on proposed mine shaft
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia environmental regulators want more information from a coal mine operator that proposes to build a ventilation shaft near Grafton’s Tygart Lake State Park.
The state Division of Mining and Reclamation has asked ICG Tygart Valley LLC to show how noise would be minimized from any proposed ventilation shaft site.
Residents and park visitors are concerned about noise from a large fan and about methane coming through the shaft. Those concerns have prompted ICG to consider alternate locations.
The Department of Environmental Protection says it doesn’t foresee methane issues from the shaft because the concentration of the gas would be small.
ICG is a subsidiary of Arch Coal.
