MEC baseball: W.Va. State reaches title game
Notre Dame 9, Concord 8: A late two-run rally gave Notre Dame a victory over Urbana in a wild and rainy contest. With the win, Notre Dame advances to today’s final day, where it will meet West Virginia State at 1 p.m. The Falcons will have to beat the Jackets twice to claim the conference crown.
Notre Dame took the lead for good against Urbana in the bottom of the seventh after Danny Beaver, Shane DeFranco, and T.J. Lett reached on a double and two walks. Troy Findlay drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it at 8 and Ryan Sanders gave Notre Dame the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Notre Dame used a five-run sixth inning to seemingly take control, but a seven-run top of the seventh gave Urbana a brief 8-7 lead.
Matt Kestelic picked up the win after throwing the final two innings for Notre Dame, and worked around a one-out walk and double in the ninth inning.
Beaver was 2 for 4 with a double and three runs scored for the Falcons (26-21), while Sanders and Troy Findlay each drove in a pair of runs.
Matt Paculan went 2 for 4 with a triple and Robert Tavone Jr. went 3 for 4 for Urbana (24-21).
Concord 5, Shepherd 1: Joey Miller laced a double and a solo home run as defending-champion Concord stayed alive.
The Mountain Lions (38-15), who defeated West Virginia State 11-4 in the final West Virginia Conference championship game last season, were set to face the Jackets again Saturday night.
Chris Kelly threw a complete game for Concord, yielding just seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out a pair. Brandon Costa also singled twice and drove in a run for the Mountain Lions.
Kyle Porter went 2 for 3 to lead Shepherd (38-12), which entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed but was eliminated with the loss.
