Blasts from the past: Returning state track luminaries

Several record holders for running events when the state meet was held in yards (pre-1980) are coming back to Laidley Field to present awards to this year’s state track meet champions:

David Bowman, Duval — 4:19 in AA mile (1976); now lives in West Virginia

Frances Daniell, Parkersburg — 2:22 in girls AAA 880 run (1979); state meet high-point winner 1979; now lives in Illinois

Kerry Marbury, Monongah — 21.9 in AA 220 dash (1970); state meet high-point winner 1969, 1970; played football at WVU, later in CFL; long-time professor at Fairmont State; now works as FSU safety director

Tom Pridemore, Ansted — 14.2 in AA 120 hurdles (1974); played football at WVU, later eight years as defensive back for Atlanta Falcons; owns pipeline construction company in Atlanta area

Paul Reed, St. Marys — 49.6 in AA 440 run (1978); state meet high-point winner in 1977, 1978, 1979; now lives in Ohio

Tom Reid, Woodrow Wilson — 9.7 in 100 dash (1972), 21.1 in 220 dash (1972); state meet high-point winner 1971, 1972; selected as West Virginia track athlete of year in 1972; now lives in South Carolina

Bob Rieves, Wheeling — 47.7 in 440 run (1969); state meet high-point winner in 1969; now lives in New York

Cynthia Shelton, DuPont — 25.6 in girls 220 dash (1976), 57.8 in 440 run (1978); 14.5 in 110 hurdles (1978); state meet high-point winner 1977, 1978; now lives in Minnesota

Wilson Smith, Huntington — 1:54.3 in AAA 880 run (1968); ran at Villanova; now practices medicine in South Carolina
