Prep roundup: Buffalo wins section baseball title over Catholic

Aaron Lewis struck out 13 in a complete-game effort to lead host Buffalo to a 13-6 win over defending state champion Charleston Catholic in the Class A Region 4 Section 4 baseball tournament Friday.

Nick Gunther belted two doubles and drove in four runs and Brad Harris, Connor Fields and Brandon Buntura each added two hits for the Bison (17-11). Connor Golden went 3 for 4 with a triple and Michael Martin doubled for the Irish.

Valley 12, Van 2: Raeshawn Breckenridge fired a five-inning three-hitter with nine strikeouts and also clouted a solo homer for the host Greyhounds (17-9) in their Class A sectional. Damaria Davis went 2 for 3 for Valley and Druw Bowen had a homer. Valley and Sherman play a doubleheader at noon today in Smithers.

Thursday’s game

Winfield 12, Point Pleasant 2: Bear Bellomy went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs to lead visiting Winfield past Point Pleasant in a Class AAA Region 4 Section 1 contest. Bryan Bosley went 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs and Jordan Clark drove in two runs for the Generals. Evan Potter had an RBI double and Levi Russell drove in a run to lead the Big Blacks.

Softball

Ripley 2, South Charleston 1: Kelsey Moore knocked in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel host Ripley past South Charleston 2-1 Friday in the Class AAA Region softball semifinals.

The Vikings will play at Greenbrier East on Thursday in the Region 3 final with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

Jasmine Martin’s solo home run tied it at 1-all in the top of the seventh for SC. Aaliyah Phillips and Kelly Bare each doubled for the Black Eagles. Chelsea Hager went 3 for 3 with a double and surrendered just four hits and one earned run for the Vikings while Dusti Fisher pounded out two hits.

Hoover-Sissonville postponed: The Class AA Region 4 high school softball regional semifinal between Herbert Hoover and Sissonville was postponed Friday because of rain. The matchup was also postponed due to rain Thursday.

The Huskies will visit the Indians at 2 p.m. today with the winner advancing to next week’s regional final and a berth to the state tournament. (See Page 2B for regional pairings and schedule.)

Track

Hurricane girls win regional: Hurricane captured the girls division of the Class AAA Region 4 meet at Point Pleasant Friday while Huntington claimed the boys title.

The Redskins beat out Winfield by seven points (137-130). Hurricane’s Tori Dent won the 800- and 1,600-meter events while Abbie Short (3,200), Audrey Barber (long jump) and Abby Watson (shot put) also earned victories. St. Albans’ Anacia Hines took the 100 and 100 hurdles.

On the boys side, the Highlanders edged Winfield by four points (105-101). Hurricane’s Garrett DeFries was a double winner (high jump and long jump). Spring Valley’s Jacob Kilgore won the 400 and 800. (See Page 2B for results.)
