Names in the games: Saban, Power all-stars, football all-stars

Saban’s new deal worth nearly $7 million a year

Alabama coach Nick Saban will make nearly $7 million a year through 2022.

The vote by the Alabama system trustees’ compensation committee made Saban’s new deal official nearly seven months after the university announced the agreement.

Saban, 62, will make $6.5 million in base pay and “talent fee” plus a $400,000 completion fee for each year. Saban has led the Crimson Tide to three national titles in seven seasons.

Power’s McGuire, Weiss earn all-star honors

The West Virginia Power’s Reese McGuire and Erich Weiss were selected Tuesday to the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

McGuire, a catcher, had his 19-game hit streak snapped Monday. The 19-year-old, who was one of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ two first-round selections in 2013, is carrying a .283 batting average with 17 RBIs while throwing out runners at a 48-percent clip.

Weiss, a second baseman, is fifth in the league in hitting with a .323 average and driven in 19 runs with one home run, an inside-the-park grand slam. The 22-year-old from Texas was the Pirates’ 11th-round pick in 2013 and is fifth in the SAL in on-base percentage (.417).

McGuire and Reese will play for the Northern All-Stars. The All-Star Game will take place June 17 at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, N.C.

New all-star football game at Mingo Central

After 18 years, the Hatfield-McCoy All-Star football game held in Mingo County has been discontinued, but will be replaced by a game with a new format.

The former game, which pitted players from Kentucky against West Virginia, was shelved because Kentucky coaches — whose seasons start earlier — were already busy with their squads. In its place is the inaugural East-West All-Star game on Aug. 2 at Mingo Central, with all players from West Virginia.

The East team will feature players from Mingo, Logan, Boone, Wayne, Cabell, Kanawha and Lincoln counties. The West squad has players from McDowell, Wyoming, Mercer, Summers, Monroe, Raleigh and Webster counties.
