Ethics Commission: Police can’t be school board members

CLARKSBURG — The West Virginia Ethics Commission says police officers can’t serve on county boards of education.

An advisory opinion issued by the commission says police officers already hold a public office, based on relevant case law.

Former Clarksburg police officer Michael Daugherty requested the advisory opinion. He resigned from the police department after his election to the Harrison County Board of Education was questioned.

Daugherty tells The Exponent Telegram that he’s disappointed by the opinion. He says police officers aren’t elected to their jobs.
