Sylvia Sue Scarberry passed from this life on June 5, 2014, after a heroic battle with breast cancer. She was at home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Oct. 18, 1948, in Matewan. Her father, Jack, was a coal mining foreman and her mother, Zepherine, was a stay-at-home wife and mother to eight children.
Sylvia graduated from Matewan High School at age 16 in 1965. She was working as a secretary at Sprigg Elementary School when she met and later married West Virginia Trooper Leland R. Scarberry in 1968. With Leland's job, they relocated to several towns around West Virginia, finally settling in Hurricane in 1974. There, they established roots and raised their three daughters, Paula Kay, Jennifer Leah and Valerie Ann.
Sylvia remained in Hurricane for nearly 33 years. In 2007 she moved to Maryland to live with her daughter, Jennifer, and son-in-law, Steven. There, she enjoyed the autumn of her life with family, friends and her faithful and loving companions, Mimi and Lola.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Lieutenant L.R. Scarberry; daughter, Paula Kay Scarberry; father, Jack Hamilton Hill; mother, Zepherine Syck Hill; sister, Phyllis Ann Marcum; and brother, Thomas Lee Hill.
She is survived by daughters, Jennifer Leah Scarberry Price (husband, Steven) of Hagerstown, Md., and Valerie Ann Call (husband, Richard) of Huntington; sisters, Mary Ellen Hill and Tammy Kay Hill of Matewan; and brothers, James "Bud" Franklin Hill of Matewan, Jack Hamilton Hill of Morehead, Ky., and Anthony Bruce Hill of Varney.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane.
