Manchin wants Obama to reconsider on Afghanistan

By Staff reports

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., sent a letter to the White House Tuesday asking President Barack Obama to reconsider his decision to keep 9,800 troops in Afghanistan after December 2014.

Manchin wants a “complete withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the region by the end of this year.” He said he believes the substantial funds the U.S. spends in Afghanistan are doing very little.

“Whether that [withdrawal] happens tomorrow or in 2016 or later, the inevitable outcome is a corrupt narco-state unwilling to abide by international norms or support American interests,” Manchin wrote. “In that context, I find it immoral to continue putting American lives at risk for a foregone conclusion.”

Manchin also wrote that he believes keeping 9,800 American troops in Afghanistan after the end of this year “will not turn the tide of corruption, reverse the ineptitude of Afghan leadership or undo the long history of regional tribalism that has rebuffed every Western attempt to shape the state of Afghanistan.”

The long war in Afghanistan, Manchin said, which has now lasted 12 years, has consumed “untold billions of dollars” in taxpayer money and cost the lives of more than 2,000 American soldiers.
