Three Dog Night, B.B. King headline Clay Center fall season

By Bill Lynch, Staff writer

Blues, blue-eyed soul and a comedian who sometimes runs toward blue humor highlight the Clay Center's 2014 fall season.

The regular season kicks off Sept. 28 with ‘70s rock band Three Dog Night, best known for "Joy to the World," "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" and “Old Fashioned Love Song.”

On Oct. 5, blues great B.B. King performs. The 88-year-old is one of the most influential living blues guitarists and has been cited as an inspiration for a wide variety of performers including Eric Clapton and Pink Floyd.

Beginning Oct. 31, the Clay Center partners with the Charleston Light Opera Guild for the Broadway powerhouse "Fiddler on the Roof," which tells the story of Russian milkman Tevye and his five daughters. The show has evening performances Oct. 31-Nov. 1 and Nov. 7-8 as well as matinees on Nov. 2 and 9.

In addition to the regular season, the Clay Center is offering special add-on events.

First, on Aug. 24, rock and soul singer Michael McDonald and Grammy award-winning pop rock band Toto perform. McDonald has scored dozens of hits both as a solo artist and as a member of the Doobie Brothers. Toto, mostly active on Top 40 radio through the late 1970s and early 1980s, is best known for the hits "Africa" and "Roseanna."

Next, on Oct. 24, vocalist, guitarist and flute player Ian Anderson comes to the Clay Center, performing hits from the rock band Jethro Tull as well as some of his later solo material.

Finally, on Nov. 16, comedian, satirist and political commentator Bill Maher will perform a mature audiences-only standup comedy show.

All show times are 7:30 p.m., except Jethro Tull at 8 p.m. and the “Fiddler on the Roof” matinees at 2 p.m.

Season ticket packages are on sale now. Current season ticket holders have until June 29 at 5 p.m. to renew and receive seating priority.

Season tickets are $73, $90 and $107, based on seating.

Tickets are $45, $65, $75 and $85 for Michael McDonald and Toto; $39, $55, $65 and $87 for Ian Anderson and $39, $49 and $59 for Bill Maher.
