St. Albans woman to head Kanawha Democrats
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Elaine A. Harris, of St. Albans, has been elected chairwoman of the Kanawha County Democratic Executive Committee.
Harris replaces Norris Light, who led the county Democrats for 20 years.
Harris, elected unanimously on Tuesday, is the first woman to head the county Democratic Party.
“Over the next several months, voters will be reminded the Democratic Party stands with them, not with out-of-state, corporate interests that have deep pockets to influence elections,” Harris said in a news release.
“In Kanawha County, it should be the voters who decide our elections, not outside influence peddlers.”
In recent elections, national groups have spent millions of dollars in West Virginia to support Republican candidates, threatening the Democratic Party’s longtime control of the state.
Other Democratic Executive Committee officers elected Tuesday were R. Derek Walker, vice chairman; Michelle Peters, secretary; Sheila Melton, treasurer; and Thornton Cooper, parliamentarian.
