Biggest Loser returns to Charleston

The Biggest Loser RunWalk half marathon and 5K, created by former contestants of the television reality series “The Biggest Loser,” will return to Charleston June 28.

The event, which encourages participants to run either a 13-mile half marathon or a 3.1-mile 5K, will feature Season 15 contestant Chelsea Arthurs, who will run and offer encouragement to fellow runners. Age-group awards will be given to the top three participants, and all ages and fitness levels are welcome to participate.

"Committing to the Biggest Loser RunWalk is a starting line for people to get healthy and fit, and crossing the finish line is a huge accomplishment," said Arthurs, 29, who lost nearly 100 pounds during her appearance on the show. "I'm so much happier and healthier than before. I'll be in Charleston to share my story and support everyone looking for a boost in confidence so that they, too, can transform their lives."

This is the second year the event has been held in Charleston. Dan and Jackie Evans, organizers of the RunWalk and Season 5 “Biggest Loser” contestants, said the event has a longer course-completion time limit than other similar events to encourage more inclusiveness. The event will offer finishers medals, T-shirts, downloadable photos of the race and electronic chip timing for interested participants.

The event is sponsored by the Charleston West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau, which designed the courses for the event.

"Charleston couldn't be more excited for the Biggest Loser RunWalk event," said Alisa Bailey, CEO of the Charleston CVB. "This year, the course traverses through Springhill Cemetery park, which will provide a breathtaking view of the city's river valley."

The event will also include a kids' one-mile Fun Run for children between the ages of four and 12 at noon. The half marathon will begin at 8 a.m. June 28, and the 5K will start at 8:30 a.m. Packet pick-up will take place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 27 at the Civic Center.
