How to score a permit for the observatory hunt

Permits for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s controlled hunt are free, and recipients are chosen by lottery. Permits must be applied for by Aug. 1.

Applications can be obtained by writing the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, P.O. Box 2, Green Bank, W.Va. 24944, Attention: Hunt Coordinator. Applications are also available on the WVDNR website at www.wvdnr.gov.

This year’s hunt is scheduled for Oct. 17-18. The bag limit is two antlerless deer (one per day), and an on-site lottery will be held each day for five permits to kill a deer of either sex. Hunting is restricted to bows, shotguns or muzzleloading rifles.
