Two inmates attacked in Mercer holding cell
PRINCETON, W.Va. — Authorities say two Mercer County inmates were injured in separate attacks by fellow prisoners in a holding cell.
Assistant prosecutor Janet Williamson told media outlets that Cassidy Byrd, 23, of Bluefield, was at the Mercer County Courthouse for a preliminary hearing when he was attacked Monday. James Irvin, 53, was scheduled to appear in court Monday for the setting of a trial date.
Both inmates were taken to a Princeton hospital for treatment. Their conditions weren’t immediately available.
Mercer County sheriff’s Detective Cpl. Steven A. Sommers said the inmates were attacked by different assailants.
Both men face charges involving crimes against children. Byrd is charged with the death of a child by a parent, custodian or guardian by abuse. Irving faces multiple counts of sexual assault and sexual abuse.
