Charleston holiday events to close streets on both sides of Kanawha River

By Staff reports

Fourth of July events in downtown Charleston will briefly shut down traffic on both sides of the Kanawha River, according to Rod Blackstone, assistant to Mayor Danny Jones.

Blackstone said the city's weekly Live on the Levee concert will go on as usual, with Stonestreet performing at Haddad Riverfront Park at 6:30 p.m., followed by The Black Diamond Experience. He said the region's largest fireworks display will follow at 9:30 p.m.

Kanawha Boulevard will close as usual for the Friday concert and fireworks display at 5:30 p.m., Blackstone said.

On the other side of the Kanawha River, MacCorkle Avenue will be closed from Porter Road to U.S. 119 at 6:30 p.m. in preparation for the fireworks show, Blackstone said. Drivers will still be able to get to the Amtrak station until 9 p.m., when the fireworks safety zone is set up.

After 9 p.m., the South Side Bridge, Thayer Street and Ferry Street will also be closed, Blackstone said. Louden Heights Road will also be closed between Grosscup Road and the South Side Bridge.

Traffic will also be restricted on Bridge Road at Grosscup Road, Blackstone said.

The streets will remain closed until after cleanup of the streets is complete, he said. For more information, call 304-348-8174.
