August trial set in Kanawha park timbering case

By The Associated Press

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A logger is scheduled to stand trial next month on charges of illegally timbering in a Kanawha County park.

David Russell Bowen is charged with destruction of property, wrongful injury to timber and obtaining by false pretenses.

Media outlets report that the 50-year-old Charleston resident pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court. Judge Duke Bloom scheduled Bowen’s trial for Aug. 18.

Kanawha County had hired Bowen’s company, Russell Trucking, to remove debris from Coonskin Park following the 2012 derecho. A criminal complaint filed in magistrate court says Bowen also cut trees in the park and cut and sold timber.

Bowen has said he had permission to cut trees in the park.

He remains free on $25,000 bond.
