Man charged with murder after Cross Lanes shooting

By Rusty Marks, Staff writer

A man faces a murder charge after he allegedly shot another man early Thursday after finding the man in his ex-fiancée’s home in Cross Lanes.

According to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, Dustin Wayne Bodkins, 29, of Cross Lanes, went to the Orchard Drive home of his former fiancée, Lindsey Winans, to ask for some medication. Bodkins and Winans had recently separated, according to the complaint.

When Winans went inside to get the medicine, Bodkins went into the house and started opening doors and looking in closets, according to the complaint. He allegedly found Timothy Morris, of St. Albans, hiding in a closet. Winans told Kanawha sheriff’s deputies that Morris, a friend of hers, had been at the house during the night.

The two men got into a fight, and Bodkins went into the bedroom and got a pistol, according to the complaint. He allegedly fired the gun several times at Morris, hitting him at least once. He then allegedly pointed the gun at Winans and threatened to kill her and himself.

Winans convinced Bodkins not to shoot her and the two went toward the kitchen, passing Morris on the way, the complaint says. Morris was moaning, and Bodkins allegedly began kicking him in the head.

Winans was able to call 911 around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, but Morris was dead by the time deputies arrived, the complaint says.

By that time, Bodkins had barricaded himself in a bedroom, according to Capt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. He said the sheriff’s SWAT team got him out, using a Taser to subdue him. In a news release, Crosier described Bodkins as “compliant to some SWAT demands and resistant to others.”

Bodkins was arrested and charged with murder and wanton endangerment. Following his arraignment this morning, he was sent to the South Central Regional Jail to be held without bond.
