Samuel G. Erwin, Jr

Samuel Guy Erwin Jr, 91, of Charleston, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

He was born on Aug. 1, 1922 in Lake Wales, Fla., to the late Samuel Guy Erwin, Sr. and Edith Laverne Donnell. They were originally from Troy, Tennessee and came to Charleston in 1929 to work at the newly built DuPont-Belle Plant.

Guy attended Charleston schools and graduated in the class of 1941 from Charleston Catholic High School. He attended Morris Harvey College and Milligan College before entering the United States Navy, where he was stationed in the Philippines, during World War II.

After the war, he worked at Patterson, Bell and Crane Insurance Company before starting Erwin Realty, which developed many real estate properties in Kanawha County, including Sherwood Forest, Westgate and Greenbrier Garden Apartments.

Guy was known for his quick sense of humor, his caring compassion and generosity. He never met a stranger and saw the good in every person he met. He was a loving father, grandfather and loyal friend to all who knew him.

He was a member of the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet (John) Willson of Charleston; grandson, Samuel Willson of Charleston; son, Jeff (Marilyn) Erwin of Germantown, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9 at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Charleston. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8 at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to: Charleston Catholic High School, 1033 Virginia Street, East, Charleston, WV 25301, toward the Samuel Guy Erwin Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barlowbonsall.com.
