Baby found buried in Hardy County forest
WARDENSVILLE, W.Va. -- An infant’s body was found buried in the George Washington National Forest in the Eastern Panhandle over the weekend, and police are trying to determine how the child died.
State Police troopers and Morgantown Police officers pulled over an allegedly stolen Jeep Cherokee on Interstate 79 after a chase on Saturday. Joseph A. Christy, 32, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Summer L. McDaniel, 26, of Maryville, Missouri, were arrested and charged with several offenses, said State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous. He said the couple's four children were in the Jeep during the chase.
While interviewing Christy and McDaniel, officers were told that the couple had buried the body of an infant in the forest near Wardensville in Hardy County, Baylous said.
Morgantown police, a State Police crime scene team and State Police troopers from the Moorefield detachment then went to the forest and found the child’s remains, Baylous said.
He did not know how long the baby had been buried before it was discovered. The body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's office to determine the cause and time of death.
No charges have yet been filed in the death of the child.
