Weiss, Borden lead Power past Greensboro 6-0

Erich Weiss hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give West Virginia an early 3-0 lead and the Power never looked back to record a 6-0 win over Greensboro Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park.

Weiss finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs for West Virginia (32-60 overall, 12-12 second half) while JaCoby Jones, Edwin Espinal and Chris Diaz drove home one run apiece.

Buddy Borden (5-6) earned the win for the Power, allowing just one hit in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. Jarlin Garcia (9-3) was tabbed with the loss for the Grasshoppers (59-35, 15-9), giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out five over five innings.

Outfielder Austin Meadows, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ first-round draft pick in 2013 (ninth pick overall), made his Power debut. He started in center field, batted sixth and went 1 for 4 with a single and a strikeout.

Meadows had spent time rehabbing in the Gulf Coast League and with the Bristol Pirates of the Appalachian League before coming to West Virginia.

To make room for the 19-year-old outfielder from Atlanta, Elvis Escobar was transferred to the Jamestown Jammers roster. In addition, Barrett Barnes was activated from the Power disabled list and promoted to Bradenton.

West Virginia will finish its four-game series with Greensboro at 2:05 p.m. today.
