Names in the games: Joseph, Cato, Stephenson

WVU’s Joseph named preseason All-Big 12

West Virginia University’s Karl Joseph was selected Wednesday to the preseason All-Big 12 Conference team.

The junior safety finished with 68 tackles last season with two forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, four pass breakups ,an interception and three tackles for loss. Joseph was named last week to the Bednarik Award watch list.

Herd’s Cato named to O’Brien watch list

Marshall senior quarterback Rakeem Cato, a Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award candidate, has been named to the watch list for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award for the second consecutive season.

The Miami native has thrown a touchdown pass in 32 consecutive games, the high for an active FBS quarterback (FBS record is 38 by Russell Wilson, 2009-11 at N.C. State; 2011 at Wisconsin).

Hornets land free agent Lance Stephenson

Lance Stephenson has agreed to a $27 million, three-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets.

The deal includes a team option for the third season. Stephenson is expected to be introduced at a news conference Friday.

Stephenson is coming off his best NBA season, averaging 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists. He led the league with five triple-doubles.

Alabama vs. USC in 2016 Cowboys Classic

Alabama and Southern California are set for their first regular-season matchup since some storied games in the 1970s.

The Crimson Tide and the Trojans will play in the 2016 Cowboys Classic in Arlington, Texas. The Labor Day weekend season opener at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium will be held Sept. 3, 2016.

The last time Alabama and USC met in the regular season was 1978, when the Crimson Tide won the AP national championship and the Trojans finished No. 1 in the UPI poll. Alabama’s only loss that season was 24-14 to USC.
