"Poppy" Thomas, 87, of

Clendenin, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

He worked as a welder for United Mine Workers, retired from Kanawha Manufacturing. He loved his family dearly and proud to have served in the U.S. Navy and was a dog lover. He was born April 1, 1927 in Sharon, West Virginia to the late Garnett Leftridge Thomas and Sallie Miller Thomas. He is preceded in death also by his beloved wife, Jo Helen Thomas; grandson, Thomas Christopher Young; and two great-great-grandchildren who welcomed him into heaven.

He is survived by daughters, Susan (Mike) McCracken, Sally (Gary) Young, Peggy (Barry) McCracken, Becky (Randy) Shaffer and Jo (Todd) Clendenin; sister, Mabel Miller; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and loved by many extended families.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Program.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20 at Elk Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Hafer Funeral Home Chapel, Elkview, WV. Online condolences may be shared at www.haferfuneral.net.
