Putnam County water playground has crowding issue

By The Associated Press

HURRICANE, W.Va. – A Putnam County water playground’s popularity has become a crowding issue.

Hurricane city manager Ben Newhouse tells the Charleston Daily Mail the city park’s water playground sees hundreds of children each day. Busloads of young children from camps, churches and out-of-town day-care centers flock to the playground, which opened in 2012.

Newhouse says the city council is looking for ways to help ensure the safety of children when large groups visit.

Hurricane Convention and Visitors Bureau director Brenda Campbell says the city has discussed requiring large groups to register before visiting the playground to ensure there is enough adult supervision. She says the goal is to have a ratio of one adult for every five children from those large groups.

There is no cost to come to the playground.
