Roundup: 12 Valley athletes selected for all-star game

Twelve Kanawha Valley football players have been selected to compete in the inaugural Cliffs Natural Resources Senior Bowl game, set for Saturday, Aug. 2 at Mingo Central’s Harless Stadium in Red Jacket.

The game replaces the Hatfield-McCoy Senior Bowl, which pitted players from southern West Virginia schools against their neighbors from Eastern Kentucky.

Capital leads the Kanawha Valley contingent with five players selected — James Walton, Edmond Harvey, Jonathan Pittman, Jaisson Dyer and James Richmond.

Other scheduled area participants are Jesse Barker, Jonathan Francis and Jeremy Francis of Hurricane, Eric McDaniel and Taylor Clark of St. Albans and Adam Huffman and Jon Alexander of George Washington. See complete rosters, Page 2B.

WVU TENNIS: West Virginia women’s tennis coach Miha Lisac announced Thursday that Carolina Lewis and Yvon Martinez will join the team for the upcoming season.

TennisRecruiting.net ranks Lewis, a four-star recruit who comes from Hilton Head Island, S.C., as the 20th-best high school senior in the Southeast and 67th in the nation. Lewis also ranked as South Carolina’s No. 1 tennis recruit.

Martinez, a native of Colombia, comes to Morgantown after having had success at Canon-McMillan High School (Pa.) last year. Martinez, a three-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, was ranked as the 27th-best high school senior in the Mid-Atlantic and eighth-best throughout Pennsylvania.

MU BASKETBALL: First-year Marshall coach Dan D’Antoni, assistant coach Chris Duhon and NBA veteran coach Mike D’Antoni will hold the Marshall Basketball Coaches Clinic at 1 p.m. on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington.

The three-hour clinic will contain periods led by each of the three coaches, followed by a question-and-answer session with the Marshall coaching staff and Mike D’Antoni. Individual coaches can register for $75, while staffs of two can register for $125 and three-person staffs for $150. The registration cost will include a ticket to the Marshall football home opener that night and food at the coaches social and tailgate that will follow the clinic and precede the 7 p.m. football game against Rhode Island.
