St. Albans man charged with DUI
Sgt. J.M. Williams of the Chesapeake Police Department went to 122nd Street and MacCorkle Avenue just after 5 p.m. Thursday after a man smashed a silver Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck into a telephone pole, drove through a fence and into a yard, according to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
When he got there, the telephone pole was snapped in two and the truck had damage to the front and passenger side, the criminal complaint said. The driver, David Edward Fleck, 50, of Carter Terrace in St. Albans, told Williams he had taken some Xanax about two hours before the accident and had dozed off behind the wheel, according to the criminal complaint.
Fleck allegedly failed a field sobriety test, but a breath test showed no alcohol on his breath, the criminal complaint said. Williams arrested him on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and put him in the back of his patrol car, the complaint said.
Fleck then allegedly pulled out a sandwich bag which he said contained marijuana, the complaint said. Williams took Fleck back to the police station, inspected the sandwich bag and allegedly found Xanax pills with the suspected marijuana.
Fleck was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. He was in the South Central Regional Jail Friday morning, with bond set at $5,000.
