Moments in Time: Charleston General nurses

J. Waters/wwwmywvhome.com
Nurses -- This wonderful photo shows the nurses of Charleston General Hospital at the turn of the 20th century. Ida Dell Pierson is on the back row, third from left. She was the grandmother of Nancy Williams, who submitted this photo. Can you imagine these nurses having to wear this clothing in a hospital setting? Charleston General was up on the hill in front of the Spring Hill Cemetery. It was called Thomas Hospital and Sanitarium at first, but later Charleston General Hospital. It closed in 1924 when the new hospital was built on Elmwood Avenue. The old hospital property was then deeded to the city on condition that it only be used for a city park or hospital purposes. It was in fact Charleston’s city park for many years, but now it’s low-income housing.
