Putnam County Schools makes new hires
WINFIELD — The Putnam County Board of Education approved several hires on Monday in preparation for the 2014-15 school year.
The board approved positions for about a dozen teachers, plus coaches, bus drivers and other personnel.
Even more hiring is expected in the near future, with the board planning to meet again to discuss more hires in a special meeting Aug. 13 — a day before teachers return to class.
Putnam County Schools Superintendent Chuck Hatfield said hiring will continue throughout the school year, but said he doesn’t know how many more teachers are needed.
The district currently has about 750 teachers, but officials won’t be able to adequately compare workforce and enrollment levels until October, Hatfield said. That’s when student enrollment, which determines state funding, is measured.
“Anything up to that point we don’t pay a whole lot of attention to,” Hatfield said. “That’s the important date for us.”
Student enrollment in Putnam County was nearly 10,000 as of Oct. 1 -- up from around 9,770 in the previous school year. The school district grows about 100 to 150 students each year, according to Hatfield.
Hatfield reiterated Monday that the January water crisis and the harsh winter have exacerbated things by shortening the summer with make-up days.
Also on Monday, the board transferred two employees to fill the last two assistant principal positions in the district, at Winfield and Poca middle schools.
The new Winfield Middle School Assistant Principal, Jana McGinnis, is currently serving as principal of Conner Street Elementary School, so the board is now tasked to find a leader of that school.
The school board also approved Huntington-based SullivanWebb’s $33,000 bid to perform audits through the 2015-16 fiscal year.
In addition, the board approved a roughly $72,300 purchase from Wisconsin-based Renaissance Learning for software and instructional materials. Hatfield said Monday he didn’t know exactly what the purchase was for.
