Kanawha grand jury indicts 77

By Kate White, Staff writer

A Kanawha County grand jury indicted two people on attempted murder charges Thursday in connection to a May shooting in a South Charleston neighborhood.

Terrence Arthur Brown, 24, of Dunbar, and Ashley Lynn Workman, 19, of South Charleston, were also indicted on charges of malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.

The charges stem from the shooting of Jason Flester at 241 Staunton Ave. Police say Flester was shot once in the stomach and once in the arm. Flester identified Brown as his shooter in a photograph lineup, according to police.

Workman was also arrested shortly after the shooting, but charged only with conspiracy to commit malicious wounding.

Charles Miller, chief of staff for the Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, said Monday that it’s not uncommon for a grand jury to indict on more charges than a defendant is initially facing.

“Many times someone is arrested and initially charged with what’s obvious, but after an investigation is completed, it’s realized additional charges need to be filed,” Miller said.

An indictment is not a finding of fact; it simply means a grand jury found there’s enough evidence to warrant a jury trial.

Workman and Brown will be arraigned at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in front of Circuit Judge Carrie Webster.

In all, Kanawha Prosecuting Attorney Mark Plants announced a grand jury indicted 77 defendants.
