Kevin Barksdale will present a lecture titled “From Lost State to Mountain State: The State of Franklin and the Constitutionality of West Virginia Statehood” at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Archives and History Library at the Capitol Complex. The talk is about the political leaders of what later would become eastern Tennessee who initiated an effort to create America’s 14th state in 1784.
Thomas Memorial Hospital will celebrate World Breastfeeding Week with a reception from 9 to 11 a.m. today in the lobby. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the Nursing Nook, a room designated for the hospital’s breastfeeding employees to use for pumping milk for their babies while they are at work.
Sweet corn roast
The state Department of Agriculture will host a free sweet corn roast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday on the Capitol plaza. WVDA employees will roast approximately 50 dozen ears of sweet corn on an open grill as a token of appreciation to state employees at the Capitol and as a promotional event for sweet corn, available now at farmers markets throughout the state.
Senior exercise club
Kanawha Valley Senior Services will sponsor a monthly walking/exercise club for people 60 and older beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at KVSS, 2428 Kanawha Blvd. An exercise session will be available for those who do not want to walk. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m., with a presentation about vacations in West Virginia by Vicki Vaughan from the West Virginia Division of Tourism. For more information, call 304-348-0707.
