Henrich transfers from GW to Poca

By Ryan Pritt, Staff writer

Junior Austin Henrich enrolled at Poca High School on Wednesday, officially completing his transfer from George Washington.

The baseball and basketball player lives in the Poca school district and decided to cut his commute down considerably in this his 11th-grade year.

“It’s closer to home, especially with me driving such a long way to GW from where I live,” Henrich said. “I like the block schedule at Poca too.”

The 6-foot-4 forward/center played mostly on the junior-varsity level with the Patriots last season but did represent GW in the slam-dunk contest at the Mountain State Athletic Conference night of champions.

An infield when he’s not pitching, Henrich has established himself on the baseball diamond even further, going 3-3 with a 4.40 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 43 innings as a freshman with the Patriots and then following that up with a 4-3 campaign last year in which he recorded a pair of saves, a 2.61 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings.

In basketball, Henrich will join a Poca roster that should already be loaded with returners from last season’s state semifinal team.

Key contributors Noah and Luke Frampton, Elijah Cuffee, Matt Chandler and Kaden Meeks should all return.

Poca basketball coach Allen Osborne said that while he had never seen Henrich play, he was more than happy to welcome a player with his size and athleticism into the program.

“All I can tell you, seems like a really great kid, a good personality and he’s very athletic,” Osborne said. “We’re glad to get him. He gives us another ‘five’ and some athleticism, so we’ll see how he does when practice starts.”

“The main thing is, I just hope I can contribute,” Henrich said. “I’m really excited and I like the way [Osborne] runs his program.”

Poca finished 12-21 in baseball last season but did make a late run all the way to the Class AA Region 4 Section 4 finals before falling to Chapmanville 2-1.
