Jerry C. Hemlepp

Jerry Cecil Hemlepp, 85, of Charleston, passed away Aug. 6, 2014, at home of an extended illness.

Jerry was born in Ashland, Ky., the son of the late Paul and Esther Hemlepp. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, he was a graduate of Ashland High School, where he excelled at football, basketball and baseball. Jerry was enlisted in the United States Army during the post-World War II occupation of Germany. While in the Army, he made a name for himself as a talented athlete in both football and baseball, receiving a football scholarship to play for the University of Kentucky.

Jerry married his childhood friend, Pauline Porter, in 1952. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on his 85th birthday, July 18, 2014. He retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston, after 43 years of service. He was also a steward for his local International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Esther Hemlepp, as well as his four brothers, Charles, Joe, Gene and Paul David Hemlepp.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Porter Hemlepp of Charleston; his granddaughter, Julia Esther Galloway; and his daughter, Hilary Hemlepp-Galloway, and son-in-law, Thomas Galloway, of Huntington.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home with Dr. Archie Snedegar officiating. Burial will take place Monday in Rose Hill Burial Park, Ashland, Ky.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. until service time Sunday at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, 513 Tennessee Ave., Charleston, WV 25302.
