HallowEast reveals event’s clues in conference

Ric Cavender, in the ballpark, with a microphone, announced Thursday that a new Clue-themed murder mystery will join the lineup for this fall’s HallowEast, the annual Halloween celebration in Charleston’s East End.

Cavender, director of East End Main Street, hopes that the board game-themed event at “HallowEast: Six Feet Under” will attract a large, diverse crowd of 500 people or more to Charleston’s East End. The full lineup for the event, which runs from Oct. 23 to 25, was unveiled at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday — along with a new mascot for the event, “Dead Ed.”

This year, HallowEast will begin by bringing Clue to life at the Appalachian Power Park on Thursday, Oct. 23. Costing $15 a person or $25 for two, attendees will have the chance to move between five potential crime scenes to search for the possible weapon and interrogate suspects, played by local actors and personalities. During the 90-minute mystery challenge, additional clues will be sung by the Charleston Gay Men’s Chorale at the pitcher’s mound, and a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres will be provided at every crime scene.

“Attendees are going to find that this event is just something they can’t find anywhere else,” Cavender said. The new murder mystery, sponsored by Ciprani & Werner PC, replaces a murder mystery dinner previously held at the Woman’s Club of Charleston.

“We decided as this event evolves and grows and we get more sponsors and more investors and more partners, we need to be thinking about how we can make the event itself evolve as well.”

HallowEast and Charleston East End’s Facebook pages will begin to reveal more clues to the event beginning Sept. 1.

Alisa Bailey, president and CEO of Charleston’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Thursday that HallowEast was recently selected across 12 states as one of Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 events for the month of October 2014.

In its sixth year, HallowEast’s returning events include ArtMares, the Run Like Hell Zombie 5K Run/Walk, a zombie walk and the Costume Pub Crawl.

This year ArtMares, a horror-themed art exhibit sponsored by Contemporary Galleries, will host an open reception on Oct. 24 from 6 to 11 p.m. at Contemporary Galleries on Smith Street.

Registration for the second year of the Zombie 5K Run/Walk, which will take place Oct. 25, has already begun. Registration costs $35 until Oct. 3, and $45 after that. Seventy percent of the race’s proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and 30 percent will support East End revitalization efforts.

Cavender said in its inaugural year, the run/walk attracted nearly 1,000 participants who ran for their lives from attacking “zombies.”

A zombie walk down Quarrier Street will also take place Oct. 25 and makeup artists will be on hand to help walkers get into character.

Nine East End establishments will participate in the costume pub crawl presented by Proud Eagle Distribution of Charleston. Tickets are $20 for the Costume Crawl and participants can choose to attend the earlier crawl from 7 to 11 p.m. or the late night crawl from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Cavender announced at Thursday’s conference that Element Federal Credit Union is HallowEast’s title sponsor of terror accompanied by Suddenlink and Electric 102.7 joining as the media sponsors of mayhem.

Representing Element Federal Credit Union, Linda Bodie said, “We’re proud to be the main sponsor, the title sponsor, again ... . It’s a celebration that gets people out to see the businesses and it’s just so much fun.”

Cavender thanked HallowEast’s steering committee, which is comprised of Chairwoman Lori Brannon, Steve Adams, Jessica Wintz, Mary Anne Crickard and Keeley Steele. He also thanked local artist Ben Robinson for designing this year’s mascot “Dead Ed” and said Robinson’s work kicks off a new legacy to commission a local artist to design a new HallowEast mascot yearly.

Tickets for the Zombie 5k Run/Walk are on sale now at www.charlestoneastend.com. Tickets for the Clue murder mystery and pub crawl will go on sale Sept. 1.
